"Yesterday I put my back to the ultimate test by completing a 220-mile bike ride. My discs still may be bulging or ruptured, but I now know that my severe pain was the product of misuse of my body. The Technique gave me the ability to free my back of tension and stress." Douglas K. Hodges, commodities trader For skill enhancement With a fuller understanding of how the body works, you can return to activities you enjoy. Athletes and martial artists can refine their form, optimize their strength and increase endurance. Public speakers can lessen performance anxiety and improve voice quality. Performing artists can relieve tension and illuminate their stage presence. "The Technique helped me to develop a sense of ease, presence and control-both physically and emotionally. I feel more centered in my work, both as a therapist and Aikido practitioner." Ania Small, psychotherapist, How it began F.M. Alexander, an Australian actor (1869-1955), developed the method to solve his own vocal problem. Through extensive self-observation and experiment, he discovered that the relationship of the head, neck and spine is crucial in determining quality of movement and function. He called this the primary control. When the neck muscles do not overwork, the head balances lightly, the spine naturally lengthens and the body's internal support system revives. Alexander developed a step-by-step process to elicit the primary control and restore the body's capacity for expansion and poise. "Mr. Alexander has demonstrated a new scientific principle with respect to the control of human behavior as important as any principle ever discovered in the domain of external nature." John Dewey, educator and philosopher
A proven method Alexander's findings have been supported by Nobel laureates in behavioral science and physiology. Clinical studies show that the Technique modifies stress responses while improving breathing capacity and posture. In a 1988 research study, chronic pain sufferers chose the Alexander Technique as their preferred method for long-term relief. "Hope, you took the time to understand the traps I fall into in my acting, and find a way to get rid of them. You gave me a clear experience specifically aimed at my needs. My sleep patterns have changed, my asthma symptoms are greatly reduced and, in combination with vocal therapy, my vocal nodes are gone!" Actor, Alley Theater
